|The West Country and Battle of Britain light pacifics (4-6-2s) were the revolutionary handiwork of the Southern Railway's engineering genius, Oliver Bulleid. With many novel and experimental features, the first entered service in the last weeks of the Second World War, numbered as 21C101 and named EXETER. A total of 110 were built, the last being No 34110 66 SQUADRON, by which time the SR had ceased to exist and British Railways had taken over. Although much loved by most of their crews and enthusiasts, they had a number of features which proved problematic and the majority were modified to a very different appearance from 1957 onwards.
