A3 Class- 60097 HUMORIST
A3 Class No. 60097 HUMORIST, uniquely fitted with large smoke deflectors and a Kylchap blastpipe and double chimney, heads the down 'Yorkshire Pullman' and is seen passing Greenwood signal box just before entering Hadley Wood South Tunnel. The loco is In LNER green livery with 'British Railways ' on tender. c. 1948. Note the elderly GNR signals. This location, seen from inside the signal box, was the subject of the famous poster 'On Early Shift' by Terence Cuneo, in the same year, depicting the interior of the signal box, with a signalman pulling on a signal lever, looking through the windows to the line outside as an express passenger train hauled by an A4 class Pacific 4-6-2 steam locomotive approaches. The signal man in the painting, Brian Barr, reportedly worked in that box until the 1959 resignalling.
