British Railways (BR) Southern Region (SR) entered the Nationalisation period on January 1st 1948 with 1,851 steam locomotives on its books, a small fraction out of the total in excess of 20,000 owned by BR.
In this Gallery, you will find sub-galleries with images for each class of SR steam locomotive. These are arranged in broadly numerical order of the locos, so for example the former London and South Western Railway (LSWR) M7 CLASS, which comprised engines numbered in a range which began at No 30021, appears before the London Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR) A1X CLASS, because the latter was numbered in a range commencing at No 32635.
