Our images are sourced from our collection of negatives and slides, which includes material from the early 20th century through to the present day. We are also very grateful to the photographers who have allowed us to display their best work on the website.

Bernard Brown is a skilled photographer who was operating mainly in the 1950s in the Derby area.
Nigel Kendall was educated in New Zealand and, after coming to the UK, studied design and photography at the Bournemouth & Poole College of Art. In 1965 he moved to London and started work in advertising, then in the following years became a magazine journalist. He is the author of several books, including 'Bulleid Pacifics' and 'Last call for steam'. His photography is top class and combines artistry with technical excellence.
The Dave Salmon collection is in the care of Geoff Burch, well known author and writer, and we are pleased to host these excellent images. Dave (and Geoff) were employed at Guildford mpd in the 1960s and therefore had access to great photographic opportunities.
THE KEITH WIDDOWSON COLLECTION
Keith is a very well known author of a series of books recalling his country wide travels in the 1960s in pursuit of steam traction. We are pleased to host over 700 of his pictures representing the vast majority of his 1960s collection.

We are happy to host top quality railway images and pay royalties to the copyright owner when sales of photographs or reproduction of images occurs.
Ownership of copyright remains with the photographer and we always try to secure full acknowledgement and if possible a complimentary copy of the publication.
We do not buy or rent negatives or slides.
All these aspects are subject to negotiation and defined in a written agreement.
Images must be supplied as maximum quality 'jpegs', at least 3000px width, preferably 4500 px. They need to be fully captioned following our house style (available on request) and be of a suitable quality in terms of tonal range, contrast and sharpness. Any significant blemishes need to have been corrected so the image is free of dust spots and scratches. In short they need to be website ready!
We can carry out cleaning and adjustment if required at our labour cost. This is a hand-crafted activity and brings out the very best of old negatives and slides which might otherwise be lost to posterity.
